Why should I join a Métis local?

Métis locals are a supportive community to bring together Métis people to promote Métis culture, advocate for Métis rights, provide programs and services to support the Métis community, and there are times where these programs and services are limited to members of a particular local or local members are given priority. In addition, locals are the way that citizens have representation in the Métis Nation Legislative Assembly of the Métis Nation – Saskatchewan government.

What if I don't want to deal with the politics of the Métis Nation – Saskatchewan?

The leadership of Saskatoon Métis Local 126 strives very hard to separate the politics of of the nation from the activities of the Local. We recognize that a lot of Métis in the larger community are tired of and not interested in Métis politics and want to stay away from this, and the same goes for a lot of our members. We want to provide a welcome place that does its best support our members through the programs and services that we provide and to keep the politics at arms length for those who don't want to be involved with that.

What if I have another local back home, can I join Local 126?

According to the Constitution of the Métis Nation – Saskatchewan, everyone who joins a local needs to ordinarily be resident for at least six months in the community where the local is located (or the local nearest them if there isn't a local in their community), with two exceptions:

Local 126 has a mandate to support Métis post-secondary students in Saskatoon, but students aren't required to transfer their membership in their home local. This presents challenges for students in Saskatoon because they might not have access to a Métis local to support them while they are in school and they miss out on the programs and services provided by a Saskatoon local.  Local 126 has a separate class of membership for students in these situations so that students don't have to lose membership in their home locals that supported them before moving to Saskatoon while providing a supportive Métis community to join and get access to programs and services when they are in school. Simply fill out the Local 126 application form, check the box for Affiliate membership, and send it in.

If you have moved to Saskatoon and plan on staying here, you can transfer you local membership to our local by filling out the Local 126 membership application by checking the box for Full membership.
